Care for climbing rope

Cleaning, maintenance, the effect of chemicals and rope disinfection

Dirty rope can be washed by hand in lukewarm water up to 30 °C (86 °F). For better washing we recommend using TENDON ROPE CLEANER. The rope should be well rinsed with clean water and dried in a dry, shady place. The rope must not come into contact with any chemical, if it does, do not use it further. Damage to the rope is usually not visible at first glance. A weak 1% solution of hypermanganese or MIRAZYME can be used to disinfect the rope.

Negative effects on the life of dynamic ropes (moisture and icing)

If the rope is wet or frozen, there is a significant reduction in its dynamic properties and strength, especially the strength in knots. Rubbing against rocks, carabiners or other sharp edges is the most common mechanical damage to the rope. Dust penetrating through moisture into the structure of the rope causes it to wear slowly. Friction and subsequent thermal effects during lowering and rappelling can damage the rope braid and reduce its strength and life. Always use a rope wrap if possible.

The effect of storage and ageing conditioned by use

Ropes must not be stored near heat radiators and other heat sources. It is also necessary to avoid storing ropes in direct sunlight (APPLIES TO SHOP WINDOWS). The recommended values for humidity and temperature in the storage environment are around 60% and 20 °C. The ropes should not come into contact with any chemicals (organic chemicals, oils, acids) and their fumes. If this occurs, do not use the rope further. Do not use rope marked with unknown adhesive tape (except those recommended by the manufacturer).

Checking ropes

The rope should be checked visually and by touch after every climbing day, after every major fall, after every climbing activity, or if you use crampons and an ice axe. If the climber uses dynamic ropes for construction work at height or in rescue work, they should arrange for a person authorized by the manufacturer to carry out an inspection at least every twelve months. The manufacturer is not responsible for any accident caused by the use of a damaged rope that should have been removed from use. A rope that has been removed from use shall be marked or degraded in such a way as to preclude its continued use.
