Voyage around the world
Length 15.4 m, width 4.6 m, a brave crew and yachting ropes made by LANEX – this is LAVINIA, a boat which has set out on a long voyage.
Captain Pavel Jeřábek with a crew of four set sail from Kos in Croatia on 5th April and steer for Istanbul and then around the world. They are the only Czech team participating in the EMYR 2011 (EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN YACHT RALLY) which starts in Istanbul on 22nd April and continues southwards to Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and finally Egypt where they are expected to land in mid-June. Then they are planning to sail to the Red Sea via the Suez Canal. They want to moor the boat in the new marina at Hurghada and make a “lightning visit” home. Let us hope Hurghada will be open this season after the disturbances in Egypt. In the second half of July, the crew are going to continue their voyage to Oman via the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, then the Indian Ocean – to the Maldives, India, Sri Lanka, across the Bay of Bengal to Malaysia. Towards the end of the year we may meet them in Thailand.
We wanted to know something about the beginning of the voyage, so we contacted the captain Pavel Jeřábek:
“I can give you a brief answer only. I have no access to the Internet, which I need. We are in Istanbul and the Rally starts on Sunday. For more information see www.emyr.org. Nothing goes easy here. Our boat was under repair till today because we encountered a storm before the Dardanelles, hit a rock and damaged the rudder. The pumps were pumping water for two days, in Istanbul we moved to a dry dock, and today everything is in good order and we can continue.”
We hope that the hard beginning steels your determination to make your dream come true. We wish you good luck and a fair wind to fill your sails…
